Mike Skinner

No. 5 Exide Toyota Tundra
Charlotte Motor Speedway – N.C. Education Lottery 200
May 21, 2010

Mike Skinner and the No. 5 Randy Moss Motorsports team welcomed Exide back to the hood of their Toyota Tundra for the first time during the 2010 season on Friday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The event featured just one day of on-track competition, which meant teams had to practice and qualify their trucks before the scheduled starting time of 8 p.m.

The morning started out on a high note as the No. 5 Exide Tundra was fast in both sessions. Skinner struggled with the handling of his truck through the corners of the 1.5-mile Charlotte Motor Speedway, but the team adjusted his truck throughout the practice sessions and felt like they had a truck strong enough to run in the lead pack during the 200-mile race.

Just hours before the race was scheduled to begin, rain came through the area and delayed the beginning of the 134-lap event. The field finally took the green flag at nearly 11:00 p.m. and raced through the night.

Skinner called in to his crew early in the event to update the Exide Toyota team on the handling of their Tundra. His machine was too tight around the top of the track, but could travel through the corners pretty well in the bottom groove. Skinner kept the No. 5 Exide Toyota Tundra steadily in the top-10 for the first half the race.

On lap 79, Skinner came down pit road for a routine green-flag pit stop. However, the caution flag came out just as Skinner entered pit road and resulted in the No. 5 Exide Toyota Tundra being scored a lap down. Skinner was able to get the “wave-around” to remain on the lead lap, but the ill-timed caution left the No. 5 Exide Toyota Tundra scored in the 15th position.

A series of cautions throughout the second half of the event allowed the Exide Toyota Tundra team to work on their truck, make changes to prepare the truck for the end of the race. Late-race restarts allowed Skinner to move through the field and achieve a sixth-place finish. The finish moved Skinner up to eighth place in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver points.
