Mike Skinner ORP Recap

Mike Skinner

No. 5 International Truck/Monaco RV Toyota Tundra
O’Reilly Raceway Park – AAA Insurance 200
July 23, 2010

Mike Skinner brought the No. 5 International Truck/Monaco RVs Toyota Tundra home in the 15th position after a long day of competition at O’Reilly Raceway Park. The International Truck/Monaco RVs team worked tirelessly throughout the day adjusting their Toyota Tundra to the changing track conditions hoping to ultimately find the balance Skinner was looking for.

During the morning practice sessions, the team worked to get their truck exactly where they needed it for race trim. During the first practice session, Skinner placed himself second on the board and ran inside the top three for the majority of final practice. When it came time to qualify Skinner laid down a lap of 22.698 seconds placing him sixth on the starting grid.

Shortly after the AAA Insurance 200 began, Skinner called into the crew to report trouble with the handling of the No. 5 International Truck/Monaco RVs Toyota Tundra. Skinner spent the early portion of the event struggling to find grip around the Indianapolis short-track and even went a lap down early in the race.

The team rebounded to earn the free pass during the third caution period allowing Skinner to return to the lead lap of competition. Meanwhile the No. 5 International Truck/Monaco RVs Toyota Tundra team worked diligently during each pit stop to adjust on Skinner’s truck and to allow him to pick up speed around O’Reilly Raceway Park.

The International Truck/Monaco RVs team took one more swing at adjusting Skinner’s truck with a combination of chassis adjustments and air pressure changes. While he continued to deal with a loose truck, Skinner raced inside the top-15 for the remainder of the 200-lap event

“I’m really proud of the effort my team gave today,” said Mike Skinner, driver of the No. 5 International Truck/Monaco RVs Toyota Tundra. “We made a lot of changes to our truck throughout the day and we did the best we could. We had fast laps throughout practice and laid down a solid qualifying run. We struggled with handling throughout the race and Stacy [Johnson, crew chief] made all kinds of adjustments but nothing seemed to work.

“I’m really excited about going to Pocono next weekend. I think we have a great truck for that race and I’ve fortunate to be one of the drivers that has experience at that track. Our team has made a few discoveries over the last few weeks at the wind tunnel and 7-post and I think we’ll be in good shape for the race next weekend.”

Next weekend, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will make their debut at Pocono Raceway. A few series regulars like Skinner have conquered the “Tricky Triangle” in other racing series, but for many drivers it will be a completely new challenge. Watch the action live on Saturday, July 31st at 12:30 p.m. EST on SPEED Channel. Fans can also tune into MRN or Sirius Satellite Radio for live commentary and a play-by-play of the action at Pocono Raceway.

David Starr ORP Recap

No. 81 PC*MILER Navigator Toyota Tundra
O’Reilly Raceway Park – AAA Insurance 200
July 23, 2010

David Starr and the No. 81 PC*MILER Navigator Toyota Tundra team finished the AAA Insurance 200 in ninth-place after racing near the front of the field for the majority of the 200-lap event. The team had changed nearly everything about their Toyota Tundra at some point throughout the day while searching for the balance that Starr needed from his truck.

The PC*MILER Navigator crew tried a variety of changes throughout the two practice sessions at O’Reilly Raceway Park where they recorded a fast lap of 23.325 seconds. The team tried everything from adjusting on their own setup to using a setup similar to that of teammate Mike Skinner. When it came time to qualify, Starr laid down a fast lap of 22.758 seconds allowing him to roll off 10th for Friday night’s race.

After completing just 10 laps around the 0.686-mile oval, Starr called into the crew requesting more forward bite for the PC*MILER Navigator Toyota Tundra. His truck was continually getting tighter through the center of the corner and Starr desperately needed more forward bite. The crew utilized two pit stops during the 200-lap event to adjust the balance of their truck while Starr continued to hit his marks and log laps around O’Reilly Raceway Park.

With 40 laps remaining in the 200-lap event, Starr was forced into the wall when one of his competitors ran him up into the marbles. Starr was able to continue racing with minor damage to the No. 81 PC*MILER Navigator Toyota Tundra, but the contact pushed in the front splitter several inches and once again changed the balance of the truck as Starr tried to travel through the turns. By the time the checkered flag fell Starr was scored in the ninth position.

“Doug Wolcott and the entire Randy Moss Motorsports team worked really hard today,” said David Starr, driver of the No. 81 PC*MILER Navigator Toyota Tundra. “We changed everything on the truck today except the PC*MILER Navigator stickers. Even though our truck wasn’t very good during the practice sessions this morning, we just kept working on it. We were able to qualify in the top-10 and had a great race tonight. This team never gives up and that is one of my favorite things about working with the PC*MILER Navigator / Randy Moss Motorsports team.”

The ninth-place result allowed Starr to pick up one spot and move into ninth in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver championship rankings. Starr continues to maintain a position where he can make a run at the championship with just a 156-point gap up to second-place.

Next weekend, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will make their debut at Pocono Raceway. The “Tricky Triangle” will be a completely new challenge for Starr, as the driver of the No. 81 Toyota Tundra has never turned a lap on the 2.5-mile track. Watch the action live on Saturday, July 31st at 12:30 p.m. EST on SPEED Channel. Fans can also tune into MRN or Sirius Satellite Radio for live commentary and a play-by-play of the action from Pocono Raceway.

Mike Skinner Gateway International Raceway Recap

Mike Skinner

No. 5 Exide Toyota Tundra
Gateway International Raceway – CampingWorld.com 200
July 17, 2010

Mike Skinner and the No. 5 Toyota Tundra team welcomed Exide Batteries back to the hood of their truck for the action at Gateway International Raceway this weekend. Skinner was the defending winner at the 1.25-mile track located outside St. Louis, MO, and showed throughout the day with his No. 5 machine.

The race was originally scheduled to take place on Friday night with the temperatures in the 80s, but after a scorching day at Gateway International Raceway a nearby transformer caught on fire and left competitors and fans in the dark for more than two hours. After hours of waiting to restore power including the lights which illuminate the speedway, NASCAR made the decision to postpone the race until Saturday afternoon.

Skinner started the 160-lap event from the 13th position and attempted to race his way through the field during the heat of the afternoon. He called into the Exide Batteries crew early in the event to tell them the balance of his Toyota Tundra was perfect, but he was still struggling to find grip because of the extreme heat.

Skinner kept the Exide Batteries Toyota Tundra on the track until the lap 59 caution period when he came down pit road taking on four fresh tires, fuel, and an air pressure adjustment. During the stop, a lug nut wedged itself between the right front wheel and brake rotor and tore a section of the brake rotor off. The damage resulted in brake trouble for Skinner throughout the remaining laps, but luckily the driver of the No. 5 Exide Toyota Tundra was able to hang on.

Despite having braking issues throughout the remaining laps, Skinner was able to race his way to a 10th-place finish in the 200-mile event. The finish allowed Skinner to move up one position in the driver championship points to fifth, and he sits just 63 points out of third.

“Our Exide Toyota Tundra team worked really hard today,” said Mike Skinner following the action at Gateway International Raceway. “We had a lug nut get stuck between the wheel and the brake rotor and it actually broke the brake rotor. We’re lucky that we didn’t wreck. For damage that severe I probably should have parked it, but we kept fighting. We got really, really lucky and the Exide Tundra got a top-10 finish today with the brakes really messed up. I can’t complain about it. Under the circumstances, it was a good day.”

The next stop on the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series schedule is O’Reilly Raceway Park on Friday, July 23rd. The AAA Insurance 200 will be broadcast on SPEED Channel, SIRIUS NASCAR Radio and MRN Radio beginning at 7:30 p.m. EST. Qualifying for the race will be televised on SPEED Channel Friday evening at 5:00 p.m. EST. David Starr Gateway International Raceway Recap

No. 81 Randy Moss Motorsports Toyota Tundra
Gateway International Raceway – CampingWorld.com 200
July 17, 2010

David Starr and the No. 81 Randy Moss Motorsports team worked tirelessly to improve the handling of his Toyota Tundra throughout the scorching weekend at Gateway International Raceway. With temperatures well into the 90’s during practice and qualifying the team worked to predict what track conditions would be during the Friday night race and adjusted the No. 81 Randy Moss Motorsports Toyota Tundra accordingly.

In a bizarre turn of events, a transformer near the 1.25-mile track caught on fire and left competitors and fans in a holding pattern for more than two hours as power crews tried to restore electricity to the facility. With the track still in the dark, NASCAR made the decision to postpone the race until Saturday afternoon.

Starr qualified his Toyota Tundra in the 25th position but brushed the wall coming off turn four requiring the Randy Moss Motorsports team to make repairs to their No. 81 Toyota Tundra. Since the repairs were outside NASCAR’s typical legal adjustments, Starr was required to drop to the back of the field for the start of the 160-lap event.

Immediately after the green flag dropped, Starr began picking up positions around Gateway International Raceway. After just one lap he moved into the 27th position and was ranked inside the top-20 by the lap 14 caution period. Throughout the first half of the event, Starr struggled with his Toyota Tundra being too tight from the center off especially through turns three and four. However, the crew worked diligently through every stop to make adjustments to the No. 81 Toyota Tundra and allowed Starr to focus on simply hitting his marks during the second half of the 200-mile event.

After struggling through turns one and two, Starr asked the crew to loosen his Toyota Tundra for the final stop. The crew made a slight air pressure adjustment, but it made Starr’s Toyota Tundra a bit too free for the final laps. With less than 40 laps remaining in the 160-lap event, Starr raced to a 13th-place finish. Starr is ranked ninth in the driver championship standings and sits just 66 points outside the fifth position.

“We gave it all we had today,” said David Starr following the CampingWorld.com 200. “Doug Wolcott and the Randy Moss Motorsports team made our Toyota Tundra better with every pit stop. We’re all a little wore out today—it was very warm. This is probably the hottest that I’ve been in a race truck in a long time. Everybody did a great job to come home 13th in these conditions.”

EST. Visit www.twitter.com/rmmracing or www.facebook.com/randymossmotorsports for news and updates.

Mike Skinner Iowa Speedway Recap

No. 5 PC*MILER Navigator Toyota Tundra
Iowa Speedway – Lucas Oil 200
July 11, 2010

Mike Skinner and the No. 5 PC*MILER Navigator Toyota Tundra team struggled with the handling of their truck throughout the weekend at Iowa Speedway, but hard work and dedication allowed the team to race their way to a seventh-place finish. The team who dominated the race last year, worked tirelessly during two practice sessions on Saturday afternoon trying a variety of set ups and determine what worked best on the No. 5 PC*MILER Navigator Toyota Tundra.

After a brief rain shower passed through the area on Sunday morning, the track was dry and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series was ready to go racing. Skinner rolled off in the 15th position and remained inside the top-15 during the early part of the 200-lap event.

The driver of the No. 5 PC*MILER Navigator Toyota Tundra called into his crew during the first run to describe the handling of his truck—loose on entry into the corner and tight through the exit of the turns. The team made several adjustments during the opening pit stop and worked on Skinner’s Toyota Tundra until it was able to contend for the lead.

The caution flag was displayed to the field on lap 105 and the PC*MILER Navigator Toyota Tundra team decided to utilize a different strategy than the rest of the field. Crew chief Stacy Johnson called Skinner down pit road for a fuel-only pit stop allowing him to beat the field off pit road and inherit the race lead. The call also allowed the team to save one set of sticker tires for the closing laps of the 200-lap event.

Skinner led the field until lap 120, and managed his tires until the lap 173 caution period when he drove the No. 5 PC*MILER Navigator Toyota Tundra down pit road for fresh tires. With just over 15 scheduled laps remaining in the event, Skinner returned to the track hoping to pick up positions.

After 205-laps and a green-white-checkered ending, Skinner was scored in the seventh position. The finish allowed Skinner to maintain his sixth-place position in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver’s standings, and moved him to within 42 points of third-place.

“Iowa wasn’t quite like it was last year,” commented Mike Skinner following the racing action in the Lucas Oil 200. “We brought the same truck back with the same set-up, but we could never get it dialed in quite like it was last year. Our Toyota Tundra didn’t qualify well, but we knew that we had a good truck in race trim. I thought that we would have a top-five truck, but as it worked out with everyone’s strategy we finished seventh. I just can’t thank PC*MILER Navigator, Steve and Jackie enough for all of their support; and our other sponsors for their support as well—Exide, International Trucks, Monaco RVs, Toyota, and everybody that helps us.

“We won last year at Gateway [International Raceway] so we’re looking forward to returning there next week. Stacy Johnson [crew chief] has done a fantastic job every week and I’m excited to have him making the calls for next weekend’s race.”

Mike Skinner and the No. 5 Toyota Tundra team move on to Gateway International Raceway for the next race on the 2010 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series calendar. The race can be seen live on Speed on Friday, July 16th. Check local listings for start time.

David Starr Iowa Speedway Recap

David Starr
No. 81 Randy Moss Motorsports Toyota Tundra
Iowa Speedway – Lucas Oil 200
July 11, 2010

David Starr and the No. 81 Randy Moss Motorsports team raced their way to a 10th-place finish in Starr’s 250th NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race. After a challenging weekend in the No. 81 Randy Moss Motorsports Toyota Tundra, the team was able to rebound with their fifth top-10 finish of the 2010 season.

Rain showers passed through the area on Sunday morning leaving the garage area unsure of what the track conditions would really be like once the green flag fell. Luckily the rain passed through early allowing track personnel to dry the surface and the race was started as scheduled. Starr took the green flag in the 23rd position and immediately began working his way through the field.

By the time the first caution came out on lap 40, Starr had called into his crew to report a tight handling Tundra through the center of the corner. The driver could race around the bottom groove where the truck was not as tight, but he was unable to carry the corner speed he wanted around the low line.

The crew utilized every chance they had to improve the No. 81 Randy Moss Motorsports Toyota Tundra throughout the afternoon, and even differentiated their tire strategy to help Starr prepare for the finish. The crew saved a set of scuffed tires from early in the event and elected to put them on the No. 81 Randy Moss Motorsports Toyota Tundra during the lap 173 caution period. The strategy call put Starr on newer tires than several of his competitors and enabled him to pick up positions in the closing laps.

After 205 laps and a green-white-checker finish, the No. 81 Zachry Toyota Tundra was scored in the 10th position. Starr remains eighth in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver’s points, and sits just 98 points outside of third-place.

“Today was a tough day for the Zachry Toyota Tundra team, but we never gave up,” stated David Starr, following the Lucas Oil 200 at Iowa Speedway. “We kept making adjustments to our Tundra to make it run better, but we could never get it to exactly where we needed it. We did what we could do and we fought to the finish, so we will leave here today with our heads held high. Doug Wolcott and the entire Randy Moss Motorsports team put a lot of time and energy into the race and I appreciate all their hard work. We’re looking forward to the race at Gateway [International Speedway] and to having the chance at getting back into victory lane there. I won the race in 2004, and with the hard work and determination of the Zachry Toyota Tundra team I believe we’ll be able to contend for the win again this year.”

David Starr and the No. 81 Toyota Tundra team return to action this Friday evening at Gateway International Raceway. The race can be seen live on Speed Channel. Check local listing for start times.
