LEBANON, Tenn. (August 1, 2009) – Mike Skinner and the No. 5 PC*MILER Navigator team earned a hard-fought 14th-place finish in Saturday evening’s running of the Toyota Tundra 200 at Nashville Superspeedway. Skinner now holds down the third position in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver points battle.
The No. 5 PC*MILER Navigator Toyota Tundra was the 19th of 34 trucks to take to the track for qualifying Saturday afternoon. Skinner posted a speed of 155.487 miles per hour around the 1.33-mile track, which earned the team the 15th spot on the starting grid.
Skinner took the green flag for the start of the 150-lap event and immediately communicated to his crew that the No. 5 Toyota was handling loose in and tight off of the corners. Crew Chief Eric Phillips had his first opportunity to make adjustments to the truck during the first caution period of the day, which came at lap 36. Phillips called for new right side tires as well as a track bar adjustment to the PC*MILER Navigator machine during the lap-38 stop. With several competitors opting for four fresh tires, the No. 5 Tundra returned to the track for the restart in the third position.
Skinner continued to fight the handling of his Toyota Tundra in the mid-stages of the event and the crew took advantage of several caution period pit stops to make additional adjustments to the handling of the truck. Though he fell as far back as 20th at one point in the event, Skinner was able to fight his way into the top 15 by lap 112, and at the conclusion of the race held down the 14th spot.
“I’m very proud of these guys,” commented Skinner following the event. “We missed it this week. We missed it right off the trailer, but everybody at Randy Moss Motorsports worked their tails off. Right now, the KHI stuff with (Ron) Hornaday, Jr. -- they are in their own zip code, but I want to make sure to thank PC*MILER Navigator and Exide and everybody that works with us.”
Skinner fell one position in the NCWTS driver point standings, but remains only 32 markers behind second place and 248 behind series leader Ron Hornaday.
Mike Skinner and the No. 5 Randy Moss Motorsports Toyota Tundra team will return to action at the famed .533-mile Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway on Wednesday, August 19. The O’Reilly 200 will be broadcast at 7:30 p.m. (ET) on SPEED TV and on select affiliates of MRN Radio and Sirius-XM NASCAR Radio.
