TAYLER MALSAM OVERCOMES A FLAT TIRE TO BRING ONE EIGHTY TOYOTA TUNDRA HOME TO SEVENTH-PLACE FINISH AT ORP

Rookie of the Year Candidate Maintains Seventh-Place Spot in NCWTS Point Standings

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (July 25, 2009) – Tayler Malsam and the No. 81 One Eighty team fought through adversity once again to earn a top-10 finish in Friday’s running of the AAA Insurance 200 presented by JD Byrider at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis, IN. Malsam overcame a flat tire to finish seventh and maintain his top-10 spot in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) driver championship point standings.

Starting 10th in the 35-truck field, Malsam remained in the top-10 running positions for most of the first half of the event running as high as the eighth place. It was on lap 92 that the Raybestos Rookie of the Year (ROTY) candidate had a right front tire go down. Fortunately for Malsam and the One Eighty Randy Moss Motorsports (RMM) team, a caution came out on the same lap allowing them to come to the pit lane to change the tire.

Malsam brought his No. 81 One Eighty Toyota down to the attention of his crew for four tires, fuel and a track bar adjustments in two stops. Returning to the track for the restart in the 16th position the Seattle, Washington native had his work cut out for him to regain a spot in the top-10.

The long green-flag run saw the rookie work his way back into the top-10 before the caution flag waved again on lap 160. Crew chief Doug Wolcott called his driver back down the pit lane for the final time giving him right side tires for the closing laps of the event. Malsam returned to the track for the restart in the 10th position.

The final caution flag waved in the final laps setting up a 10-lap run to the checkered flag. Malsam, who remained in the 10th position for the restart was able to pick off a couple of positions and finish seventh earning his sixth top-10 finish of the season.

“It’s fun,” commented Malsam. “It’s just cool how you can run top and bottom on a short track and go up and race like that. It’s just awesome. It’s like being at a big track and a short track at the same time. It’s cool.”

“It was definitely tight out there,” continued Malsam commenting on the competition. “We were tight all day, but the Randy Moss Motorsports team did a great job. I had a lot of fun, but it was tight, short track racing. Our truck switched through the night. Sometimes we were better through turns one and two and sometimes we were better through (turns) three and four. It just depended on what tires we had or what Doug (Wolcott, crew chief) changed on the truck.”

With his top-10 run, Malsam was able to maintain his seventh-place position in the NCWTS point standings. In addition, the RMM driver remains the points leader in the ROTY standings with an eight-point lead over second place Johnny Sauter.

Tayler Malsam and the No. 81 Randy Moss Motorsports Toyota Tundra team will return to action at the 1.333-mile Nashville Superspeedway on August 1, 2009. Live television coverage of the Toyota Tundra 200 will begin at 7:30 p.m. (ET) on SPEED with select affiliates of MRN Radio and Sirius-XM NASCAR Radio beginning coverage at 7:00 p.m. (E.T.)

MIKE SKINNER SCORES ANOTHER RUNNER-UP FINISH AT ORP

1995 Champion Moves Back into Second Position in NCWTS Point Standings

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (July 25, 2009) – Mike Skinner finished second for the second consecutive week after leading the EARLY stages IN Friday’s running of the AAA Insurance 200 presented by JD Byrider at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis, IN.

Skinner’s runner-up finish also continued the yo-yo battle for the 2009 championship and vaulted him back into the second position in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) point standings. He trails the leader by 174 markers with 12 races remaining in the 2009 NCWTS season.

Starting from the outside of the front row, Skinner took the lead before the field completed the first lap and was credited with the top spot at lap one. The former NCWTS champion remained on the point for the first 61 laps extending his lead to over three seconds at one point. On lap 61, a battle heated up for the race lead and Skinner settled into the runner-up position.

After falling further back in the top-10 the lap 94 caution was a welcome site. Skinner’s Randy Moss Motorsports (RMM) crew chief Eric Phillips brought his driver in on lap 95 for the first time of the night. The No. 5 crew put on four fresh Goodyear tires and made an air pressure adjustment to help with the handling. Skinner returned one lap later for fuel and a track bar adjustment before returning to the track for the restart on lap 102 in the 12th position.

During the next green-flag run the No. 5 Exide Toyota was handling tight in the middle of the turn with the previous adjustments hurting the forward bite. However, with the handling issues Skinner was able to work his way through traffic and back into the top-10 running positions.

It was on lap 162 when the 1995 Series’ Champion returned to pit road for the final time. The No. 5 RMM crew gave their driver four tires and put the air pressure back. Skinner returned to the track ready for the restart in the 10th position.

In the closing laps of the race, Skinner was able to power his way to the front with the fresh tires and moved into the third position before the final caution flag waved. Taking the green flag with just 10 laps remaining, Skinner moved into the second position and raced with the leader in a side-by-side battle to the checkered flag. Skinner was unable to make the pass and had to settle for the runner-up spot for the second week in a row.

“I could’ve hit him. I ain’t made like that,” commented Skinner after the race. “Ronnie (Hornaday) is a friend of mine. He might’ve done it to me but it’s all right. When I shave in the morning I’ll like who I see. I had a great Tundra with EXIDE Batteries. Start positive, stay positive. I don’t want to give a negative energy because we finished second. I don’t like to finish second any more than anybody else does but it was a good night. It was a good points night. We led a couple laps and I just can’t thank EXIDE Batteries, Toyota and all of my sponsors. We’ve just had a great relationship for many, many years with a lot of people. We still have a lot of fire under our belly. We’re not throwing in the towel.”

Mike Skinner and the No. 5 Randy Moss Motorsports Toyota Tundra team will return to action at the 1.333-mile Nashville Superspeedway on August 1, 2009. Live television coverage of the Toyota Tundra 200 will begin at 7:30 p.m. (ET) on SPEED with select affiliates of MRN Radio and Sirius-XM NASCAR Radio beginning coverage at 7:00 p.m. (E.T.)

MALSAM (On racing at ORP): “Last week at Kentucky was exciting and disappointing at the same time. It was really cool to run up front and lead laps with the veterans in the Truck Series, but to have a cut tire that late in the race while running second was very disappointing. But we have put that race behind us and are looking forward to this weekend at ORP. I’ve never raced there before and I’ve heard it can be challenging to get around. Doug (Wolcott) and the One Eighty guys have been working hard at the shop and I know that our truck is going to be good this weekend. Mike Skinner Battles from the Back to Finish Second at Kentucky

The Veteran Remains in the Third Position in the Championship Point Standings

SPARTA, Ky. (July 20, 2009)The 12th race of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season at Kentucky Speedway marked the one-year anniversary of Randy Moss Motorsports and veteran driver Mike Skinner looked to bring home another victory for the organization. Despite qualifying in the 19th position, Skinner steadily made his way through the field and with five laps to go, the No. 5 Exide Batteries Toyota Tundra was in position to capture the checkered flag. Battling with Ron Hornaday, Skinner finished one truck length short of the win and posted a solid second-place finish. This was Skinner’s fifth top-five finish of the 2009 season, his 85th top-five finish of his Truck Series career.

Starting from the back half of the field, Skinner knew he had his work cut out for him during the 150-lap race at the 1.5-mile speedway. Gradually working his way past fellow competitors, Skinner ran in 11th-place when the first caution of the night flew on lap 34. Crew chief Eric Phillips called the 1995 Truck Series Champion to pit road for four fresh tires on lap 35, followed by a stop for fuel the next lap. Skinner restarted from the 12th position on lap 42.

By lap 50, Skinner had broke into the top-10 positions and never looked back. A short 10 laps later, the Daytona Beach, Florida resident was running in fifth-place. As a long green-flag run forced all the competitors to come to pit road for service, Skinner returned to the attention of his pit crew on lap 99 for fuel only. As a caution slowed the field on lap 112, Phillips brought the No. 5 Toyota down pit road for four fresh tires.

The final 20 laps saw three caution flags, but the restart opportunities allowed Skinner to position himself to make a run for the win. On lap 130, the Exide Tundra was in seventh-place and within 10 laps, the veteran was in the fifth position. The final restart of the 225-mile event on lap 146 left Skinner with five laps to take the lead from Hornaday. Unfortunately, Skinner came up one lap short, as the No. 5 Toyota came home one truck length behind Hornaday, posting a second-place finish for the Tundra driver.

With the runner-up finish, Skinner remains in the third position in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship point standings. He currently sits 154 points behind leader Hornaday and only 58 points behind second-place Matt Crafton.

This Friday, July 24, Mike Skinner and the No. 5 Exide Batteries Toyota Tundra team will head to the historic O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis. The green flag will drop on the AAA Insurance 200 shortly after 8:00 P.M. Eastern. SPEED will have live coverage of the 200-lap event, starting at 7:30 P.M. Eastern. Select affiliates of MRN Radio and Sirius-XM NASCAR Radio Channel 128 will also have the live radio broadcast.

Mike Skinner Quotes:

How was that finish?

“I don’t wish bad luck on anybody but we didn’t have a second-place truck. We had a good truck – one more lap and we might have had a first-place truck. I really hate it for my teammate Tayler (Malsam), the 81 truck ran up front all night and that young man did a heck of a job. I hate it for Todd (Bodine) that he had an oil leak or something there. We finished second; we have to try to stay in the game.”

Did where you started tonight’s race from have an effect on your finish?

“Ronnie (Hornaday) did a good job. I think one more lap and we might have had him, might have been able to challenge him a little bit right there. Man I hate it for Tayler Malsam, he had a good truck tonight. Both the Randy Moss Motorsports trucks did a good job. We got stuck back there from qualifying and it kind of messed us up. I want to thank the fans. I want to thank Exide and PC Miler, who just came on board to support our efforts. I want to thank Toyota. Triad put a good body on this truck. I just hate it – doggone it, we were close.”

How do you grade your team so far in 2009?

“For the budget that we’ve had and the amount of people that we’ve had with the resources – Toyota does an awesome job and these Triad engines – man, they’re just awesome. Eric Phillips and David Dollar (co-owner), they have done a heck of a lot with a little bit.”
